I have been trying to figure out a good foam for use in tool layout tray. I did an internet search and according to one manufacture (https://www.troteclaser.com/en-us/applications/foam-filter-mats/) the following foams are suitable for laser cutting:
I looked up the chemical makeup of these three plastics and it appears that the common formulations only contain, hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen.
Further research seems to indicate many people are using polyethylene.
If anyone has any other knowledge or leanings in this area, please let me know.
Dave
There is a link bookmarked on the computer attached to the laser, in chrome that has an extensive list of materials good and bad. I would start there.
Laser cutters don't like halogens ( fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At) ) so PTFE and PVC are out.You can test for some halogens in plastic if you are unsure of the source. I can show you how.

Hi David!
I found some black polyethylene foam at the shipping supply company down the street. I have 1/2" foam and special ordered 1/4" inch to make tool organizers.
It cuts well but im still working on a fast way to profile the tools.
