Come have a drink, check our our makerspace, and get educated! FREE and open to the public. Local beer donated by Snowbank Brewing. Summary: Woodworking with hand tools is in the midst of a renaissance! The techniques and tools of Japanese woodworking offer a respite from the shoddy blandness of mass manufacture, blending timeless quality with an ethic of craftsmanship all but forgotten. Japanese carpentry (daiku) and cabinetry (sashimono) have long been admired for the intricacy of their joinery, the simplicity of form, and honesty of materials in its expression. The hand tools that accomplish this work are similarly refined. Come and find out what seemingly simple tools and techniques are used to make everything from stools to houses, how to set up a basic workspace, acquire tools, keep your edges sharp, and further your own study of woodworking. Gabe Dwiggins (granitemountainwoodcraft.com) is a carpenter living in the mountains NW of Fort Collins, Co. Although originally a classically trained musician, he could never escape the need to make things out of wood. After moving to Colorado the thin air and sunshine went to his head and he took up traditional joinery with hand tools, and now runs his own shop, playing with Japanese saws and producing the ocassional shoji & tansu." Donations are welcome! We are a non-profit collaborative workspace that provides the Fort Collins community with equipment and space for all kinds of making.
