FPGAs: Soft Hardware

Lou Sharpe

Colorado Labs LLC

Summary

Did you know you can make a whole Cray-1 supercomputer in a chip you hold in your palm? How? By using FPGAs: field programmable gate arrays, soft hardware chips that can change their personality every time they wake up! They work at very high speeds and can be relatively low cost. This talk will offer an introduction and will show how these high-end devices are coming down into the realm where makers can tinker with them. At the same time they are moving into cloud computing data centers to handle heavy loads like video transcoding. We will also discuss plans for a future hands-on class on these fun devices.

Local beer and light snacks provided.
